pop music

pop music
popular music, pop music
The two terms are not interchangeable. Popular music is a generic term for music of all ages that appeals to popular tastes (e.g. one can refer to nineteenth-century popular music, the popular music of Greece, etc). Pop music is a more specific term for the commercialized popular music of the later half of the 20c, especially the 1950s and 1960s, and has in turn largely given way to the phenomenon of rock music, rap music and other special forms.
